What is a pilgrimage, and why would we consider participating in one? A Christian pilgrimage is an intentional journey in response to a stirring of the Holy Spirit within us. You might be familiar with a famous pilgrimage called “The Camino,” short for “The Way of Saint James”. This pilgrimage was featured in the 2011 movie “The Way” starring Martin Sheen. “The Way” is a journey to the Basilica of Saint James in northwest Spain. When I worked in the vocation office, I brought young men discerning a religious vocation to pilgrimages to the Holy Cross Novitiate in Colorado, the Oratory of Saint Joseph in Montreal, to the Major Basilicas in Rome, and the birthplace of Holy Cross in Le Mans, France. Pilgrimages are opportunities to change our environment and listen for the voice of God in our lives.
The Congregation of Holy Cross is organizing a pilgrimage to Italy, November 10-19, 2025. Pilgrims will meet parishioners from other Holy Cross Parishes and Colleges/Universities across the United States. They will spend time in Rome, Assisi, and Orvieto and enter through the Holy Doors at Saint Peter’s Basilica in this Year of Hope. Though not a traditional destination, there is a local “pilgrimage-like” opportunity here in our diocese. Instead of traveling to a place to listen to God, you can travel to hear a speaker make room for God’s voice. Saint Francis Xavier Church in Winooski, Vermont, is hosting acclaimed Catholic speaker Chris Stefanic for his REBOOT tour. The talk will be held on Wednesday, September 24th, from 7:00-9:00pm. Tickets are limited and available for purchase at https://buytickets.at/reallifecatholic/1663037.
Of course, we can visit our parish and walk the Way of the Cross, visit Mary’s Garden, spend time before the Blessed Sacrament, or find a quiet place in our home to place ourselves before God. The key is to be intentional. God wants to spend time with us. Let’s make it easy for Him!
